Social Anxiety and realities of behavior disorder

One of the most depressing mental health issues, social anxiety is a serious concern in the UK and worldwide. Also termed as “social phobia”, the problem refers to intense fear or anxiety of being negatively evaluated or judged or rejected in social situations. Those who suffer from social anxiety excessively worry about attending any social environment or taking part in any performance before others. They constantly fear of ending up as awkward, boring, silly or inadequate in social circles. They become extremely conscious of criticism and get trapped in the feeling of being unwanted in a gathering or group. In fact, extreme worries about social situations often lead them to avoid such gatherings – and they mostly find comfort in isolation.

They end up with low self-esteem, low self-confidence and irrational feeling of incompetency about themselves.

Worries of inadequacy and incompetence invariably push the victim from trying out new things and exploring new opportunities ahead. It could be in the context of anything in life- job, relationships, friendships and so on. For example, a person suffering from social anxiety may refuse an otherwise excellent job offer which needs him to work in a team. He will also fear approaching his romantic interest out of the fear of being rejected.  It’s this extreme anxiousness or phobia that will force him into isolation and depression. A lot of people who suffer from social anxiety, end up into major depressive disorders and addiction issues.

Social anxiety disorders are mostly treated through Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy. It’s a therapy where a licensed therapist tries to find out the underlying circumstances that are triggering such unwanted anxious behaviors. It could be some mishap from the past or some wrong notion about a certain situation. The therapy also emphasizes on teaching the patient to accept the fear and worries and winning them. Patients under such therapies are usually advised to look beyond the comfort zone and participate proactively in things they fear the most.
