How to Keep Yourself Healthy After a Spinal Cord Injury

An accident can be devastating and life-threatening, especially if it involves damage to your spinal cord. Our spinal cord is one of the most important parts of our bodies since it is the connecting pathway our brains and nerve cells use to communicate with the rest of our body.

Severe damage to your spinal cord can cause you paralysis, disabling you for the rest of your life. If you have been involved in an accident wherein your spinal cord has been badly injured, we have listed some important tips on how to keep yourself healthy for a faster recovery.

  • Follow your doctor’s advice.

Right after being dismissed from the hospital, the most important thing that you can do that will lead you to a faster and safer recovery is to follow your doctor’s advice. If there are any medications prescribed to you, such as pain relievers and anti-inflammatory drugs, take them at the right time and at the right dosage.

Your doctor will also advise you on the right time to slowly start exercising, and the maximum weight that you are allowed to carry. You should see to it that you follow every bit of advice.

  • Take a rest.

Resting is a crucial part of recovery as it lets your body heal. However, lying on your back for a very long time is not recommended, as it may only promote back pain. Make sure that you get up or switch to your side every few hours in order to distribute weight and avoid bed sores. However, you do not have to sleep often, and it’s advised that you entertain yourself with materials such as reading books, watching movies, and playing board games with your friends and loved ones.

  • Avoid strenuous activities for a while.

As much as you would love to get out of bed and be active immediately, involving yourself in physically strenuous activities and workouts should be avoided during the first few weeks after your injury. This could mean that you have to take an indefinite leave from your work and/or school. You simply must avoid any activities that might worsen your current condition. So, before you start moving around, it is best that you ask your doctor about what you can and can’t do in order to have a speedy recovery.

  • Maintain a proper diet.

Since you will be resting a lot, having a diet rich in protein, which can ease your digestion, should also be prioritized. Try to avoid food that contains no significant nutritional value. This means your diet should be rich in protein, which can be found in eggs, fish, beans, and poultry. Part of keeping yourself healthy while recovering from a spinal cord injury, or any injury for that matter, is to follow a healthy diet full of vitamins and minerals to strengthen your bones and muscles, and to bring you back to your prime.

Recovering from a spinal injury and simultaneously following all the crucial steps set by your doctor can be quite challenging.
